Dr. Angel M. López-Berríos has been an Ad-Honorem Professor in the Physics Department at the Mayaguez Campus of the University of Puerto Rico (UPRM) since he ended his regular appointment there in 2013. Dr. López-Berríos developed the first research program in experimental particle physics in Puerto Rico. This field attempts to understand the fundamental constituents and forces in the universe. The High Energy Physics Group that he established was awarded a competitive grant by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This grant was renewed continuously for twenty years. During its formative years, this research program also received funding from DOE-EPSCoR. Dr. López-Berríos served as the Director of the High Energy Physics Cluster as well as the Associate Director of the Puerto Rico DOE-EPSCoR Project which included researchers from various campuses organized in three clusters. In later years he also received competitive grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. López-Berríos received national recognition when he was named to the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel by the Secretary of the Department of Energy in 2000. As a member of this oversight group for three years, he made recommendations to DOE and NSF as to the general direction of this field in the United States. Under his leadership the UPRM High Energy Physics Group has collaborated in several experiments carried out at the proton accelerator at the Fermi National Laboratory near Chicago, at the Cornell Linear Accelerator and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva, Switzerland. At the LHC, the Group participated in an experiment that discovered the Higgs boson, the most important discovery in this field in the last forty years.
